SignageWire: Feeding the digital signage and kiosk hype machine

Safeway wins POPAI award for merchandising excellence

Author: WireSpring on 2008-05-30 11:31:24

From a press release making the rounds (no link just yet, here's the text):

ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA -- May 30, 2008, POPAI, The Global Association for Marketing at-Retail announces that Safeway Inc. is the recipient of the 2008 Retail Chief Award for Merchandising Excellence. The Retailer Chief Award is presented to companies that demonstrate effective and innovative use of marketing at-retail in their overall marketing strategy and adhere to the highest business standards. Accepting the award for Safeway, Inc. during the Night of Honors at the POPAI Industry Leadership Conference is Greg Ten Eyck, Director Public Affairs/Government Relations. Tom Ujfalussy, Chairman of the Nominating Committee and Director of New Concept Marketing for The Central Group explained, "Safeway was chosen for their innovative use of marketing at-retail; for their pioneering participation in the Marketing At Retail Initiative (MARI); and for their dedication to ethical business practices." Past Chief Award winners include: BP Oil Corporation, General Motors, McDonald's Corporation and Walgreens Company.

Members of POPAI are solicited for their nominations for this award. POPAI's Nominating Committee selects the company that will accept the award during the Night of Honors at the annual Industry Leadership Conference. The 2008 ILC is being held at the Hyatt Regency at Penn's Landing, Philadelphia, PA, June 4-6, 2008. For tickets to the Night of Honors or the Conference, call Lynn Goldberg at 703-373-8804 or visit www.popai.com/ilc.

Our take:

Safeway has been aggressively working to stave off the ravages of recession, and has done a great job so far.  Between incentive programs for using tax rebate money for groceries and opening up its private-label brands to other grocers, the firm continues to make savvy business decisions while still being one of the most highly-regarded companies in its category.  Thus it's not surprising to learn that their merchandising team hasn't been asleep at the job, but has in fact taken home a top honor from POPAI, the de-facto expert body in the world of merchandising.
